Morey Middle School And John F. Kennedy High School To Showcase Work On The History Channel “Save Our History” Campaign

Students and educators from Morey Middle School and John F. Kennedy High School at 1:30 p.m. today (Thursday, May 13) will be joined by Mayor Hickenlooper, city officials and Superintendent Jerry Wartgow to celebrate the culmination of their hard work and lessons learned through the Denver Public Schools partnership with The History Channel® Save Our History initiative, a program that encourages communities and schools to take an active role in historical preservation.

Students from the two schools are taking part in a citywide project helping to restore the Temple Events Center downtown, one of the historic buildings in the Colfax Ave. corridor.

More than 200 students are participating in the Save Our History program today at the Temple Events Center, 1595 Pearl St., conducting research on local historic sites and creating unique projects - from a collection of research about the buildings that line Colfax Ave., to a display about the historic Highlands neighborhood, to the development of a website that will include oral histories and photographs of local neighborhoods.

Save Our History is a national philanthropic initiative by The History Channel, working with the White House’s Preserve America campaign, which empowers communities and schools to take an active role in preservation. Denver is one of the first cities to join the Save Our History program. Nearly 12,000 students participated in the program this spring, utilizing the education manuals as part of their curriculum.
