Baker Middle School Will Implement School Uniforms In 2004-2005

Baker Middle School principal Linda Torres has announced that the school will implement a school uniform policy next year.

The decision comes following two parental informational meetings in April. Surveys indicate that that more than 80 percent of the parents support the switch.

At the informational meetings, the proposal was outlined for parents and the school also provided a fashion show to demonstrate some examples of how the uniforms might look. Another fashion show will be held at the school’s parent night on Wednesday, May 12.

In a letter to Baker parents, principal Torres said research indicates that schools with a uniform dress policy “experience unification of all students at the school” and see “decreasing violence and theft.” She also said the uniforms will help parents and students resist peer pressure, help students in concentrating on school work and increase student focus on learning.

Under the new policy, all pants, shorts, skirts, jumpers and Capris must be solid navy or khaki (tan). No jeans will be permitted. Long or short-sleeved shirts must be Polo collared. Shirts must be navy blue or white. Sweatshirts, sweaters and vests must also be navy blue or white. No messages, words, insignias or designs are permitted on the shirts. The only type of T-shirt allowed will be a Baker Middle School T-shirt.

Both K-Mart and Wal-Mart have agreed to stock the school’s uniform choices and give family members a 20 percent discount. Both stores will sell the uniforms at registration as a convenience to families. One of the uniform choices is a Baker T-shirt. The school will be providing each student a free T-shirt at registration. Principal Torres said that staff will shop local second-hand stores to have some clothes available for those families that need some help.
