Twelve National History Day Teams Headed To State Finals

Twelve History Day teams from Denver Public Schools earned first- or second-place awards at the National History Day competition on Saturday, April 24 and are now headed to the National History Day competition in June.

National History Day will be held June 12 – 17 at the University of Maryland.

In Junior Group Performance, first place went to Angela Murray, Miesha Gantz, Belinda Lutes, Jon Shockness and Akil Luqman for their project, “The Harlem Renaissance: Not an Event, But a Process.” The group was led by teacher Barbara Allen, Denver School of the Arts.

Also in Junior Group Performance, second place went to Alexander Ghincea and Christian Ghincea for their project, “Taming the Nuclear Demon: Exploration, Encounter, and Exchange in the Development of Nuclear Technology.” The group was led by teachers Doug Wilhelm and Sharon Dacotah, Hamilton Middle School.

In the Junior Group Media category, first place went to Samantha Clifford, Carter Isberg, Shannon Desmond and Casey Wilkes for their project, “The Harlem Renaissance, A New Negro.” The group was led by Ed Glassman, Denver School of the Arts.

Also in Junior Group Media, second place went to Grete Ganasauer, Katie Aldworth and Jake Lackner for their project, “Apollo II: Race to the Moon.” This team was led by teachers Barbara Allen and Ed Glassman, Denver School of the Arts.

In Junior Individual Exhibits, second place went to Conrad Quade for his work, “Hernando Cortez and the Exploration of the Aztecs.” Conrad’s teachers for this project were Sharon Dacotah and Sara Morrow, Hamilton Middle School.

In the Senior Individual Performance category, first place went to James Laff for “John Sidney Barrymore: Breaking Down the Fourth Wall.” James’ teacher was Bonnie Guggenheim, George Washington High School.

In the same category, Kara Miller earned second place for her project, “‘A Great Ideal, A Burning Faith’: Exploring a World Without Government.” Kara’s teachers for this project were Ed Glassman and Barbara Allen, Denver School of the Arts.

In the Senior Group Performance, first place went to Rachael Smith, Allison Buss and Katie Morrison for their project, “The Dawes Act: The Knot in the Rope Between White Man and Sioux Indian.” This group was led by teacher Bonnie Guggenheim, George Washington High School.

Also in this category, second place went to Jessica Serowski, Kelsey Isberg, Brigitte Siller, Chante Karimkhani and Fred Kolouch for “The Woodstock Era: Three Days of Peace, Weeks of Hope, and Years of Protest.” This group was led by teachers Ed Glassman and Barbara Allen, Denver School of the Arts.

In Senior Individual Media, first place went to Ryan Brown for his project, “Barred From the Heavens.” Ryan’s teachers were Ed Glassman and Barbara Allen, Denver School of the Arts.

In Senior Individual Exhibits, first place went to Lincoln Collins for “The Genius of Archimedes: Exploration to Eureka!” Lincoln’s teacher was Bonnie Guggenheim, George Washington High School.

In Senior Group Exhibits, the first place award went to Shannon M. Brink, Katherine T. Lofgren and Wagma S. Mommandi for “CHOMOLUNGMA Mt. Everest: Exploration, Encounter, and Exchange in History.” This group was led by Bonnie Guggenheim, George Washington High School.
