A team of three students from East High School took second place out of 531 teams competing in the Denver Post Stock Market game. The Denver Post Stock market game allows teams to buy and sell actual stocks on the internet with an initial investment of $100,000. This is the third time that a team from East High School has finished first or second in the overall standings.
This year’s team included Cheyenne (Montgomery) Hughes, Shaquita Napier, and Starnisha Carter. They began the game 10 weeks ago and grew their initial investment to $128,000. Teams are not allowed to invest all of their money in one stock but rather must choose three. East’s best picks were Target, Taser (the non-lethal law enforcement), and Wire (a company supplying hi-tech wiring for connecting business machinery).
“We researched stocks in the Business Section (of the paper) and on the internet for about a month before the game began,” said Martin Doherty, teacher at East High School. The students will share $75 in prize money.
East High School is located at 1545 Detroit St. The school’s phone number is 303-394-8300.
