Horace Mann Middle School will host “Literacy Fair 2004 - A Celebration of Literacy Across the Curriculum” on Wednesday, May 5.
Throughout the day, teachers will be reading to their students and doing special activities related to reading and literacy.
Special guest Pat Mendoza - storyteller, singer and musician - will perform and special reading performances will be presented by school principal Gerardo de la Garza and assistant principal John Ludwig. Performances by Mendoza, de la Garza and Ludwig will be during the school’s second period, from about 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Librarian Jennifer Alevy will conduct impromptu readings in classes throughout the day.
In sixth-grade classes, for instance, math classes will hear “One Grain of Rice” by Demi and instrumental music classes will read “The Sound That Jazz Makes” by Carole Boston Weatherford. In seventh-grade, science classes will read “The Story of Paper” by Yong Chang and social studies classes will read “If the World Were a Village” by David J. Smith. In eighth-grade, vocal music students will read “David Gets His Drum” by David Francis and Bob Reiser and art students will read “Frida” by Jonah Winter.
Also throughout the day, physical education coach Bob Louis will read poetry.
