Skinner Middle School and Remington and Brown elementary schools are assembling a committee of parents, teachers and community members to help decide a new direction for their schools.
The Board of Education named 13 schools as eligible for revitalization, one of the mill levy proposals approved by voters in November 2003. The revitalization component included $2.5 million of the $20 million annual tax increase approved by voters. Schools will use the money to develop plans to increase student achievement and increase the attractiveness of the schools to the community.
Committee membership will include two to four individuals from each of these groups: parents of existing students; parents residing in the neighborhood but whose children do not attend the school; representatives from the school's staff, preferably one of whom is a member of the Collaborative School Committee; and non-parent community members.
Other committee members will include the school's principal (if he or she is continuing at that school next year) along with the Area or Assistant Area Superintendent and a non-voting staff person appointed by the Area/Assistant Superintendent who provides logistical support for the committee.
An informational meeting will be held on the following dates and times to discuss the revitalization and application process: 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, May 4 at Remington Elementary School, 4735 Pecos St.; 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 5 at Skinner Middle School, 3435 W. 40th Ave.; and 7 p.m. Thursday, May 6 at Brown Elementary School, 2550 Lowell Blvd.
Those interested in being involved in a school’s revitalization committee should complete an application form with a letter of interest stating why they believe they should be appointed. Application forms are accessible online at http://northwest.dpsk12.org.
