The Colorado Constitutional Scholars champion team from East High School will be honored at a reception hosted by East High School from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 14 at the Governor’s Residence (400 E. 8th Ave.) The team, made up of students from the advanced placement Political Studies class, won the state competition of “We the People…The Citizen and the Constitution” held in December.
The reception is almost an annual event and this year will mark East’s 15th trip to Washington D.C. as the Colorado state champions. East has been participating in the national competition since 1988 and has repeatedly finished in the top 10. East was the National Champion in 1992.
The students have the opportunity to travel in May to Washington, D.C. to compete in the national “We the people…The Citizen and the Constitution” against teams from 49 other states. In order to attend the national competition, the team will need to raise nearly $28,000. Many East High School alumni, businesses and foundations are contributing to the students’ efforts to raise the money.
The Bicentennial Competition on the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights is a highly rigorous, academic competition that tests student knowledge of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights and student ability to apply that knowledge to contemporary issues while speaking persuasively in a public forum.
East High School is located at 1545 Detroit St. For more information or to RSVP for the reception, contact Beth Gower at 303-757-8253 or Marsha Chavez at 303-329-8410.
