High Schools Work With NASA, Lockheed Martin To Build Robots For State Competition

Three DPS high schools will compete with teams from 15 other high schools at Colorado’s inaugural FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) competition from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, March 26 and 27 at the University of Denver’s Ritchie Center. The event is open to the public, and admission is free.

John F. Kennedy, East and George Washington high schools each have teams in the competition and will compete in constant rotation over the course for the two-day event. Winners of this competition will move on to FIRST’s national robotics championship, a massive event that will be held at Atlanta’s Georgia Dome on April 15 to 17.
Sixteen students make up the team from John F. Kennedy High School. Students have been working with the Advanced Technical Leadership Program from Lockheed Martin.

The East High School team is made up of seven core students and members of the Industrial Technology Club. Team members worked with part kits from NASA and FIRST to build its robot.

FIRST, an education program to get students from all walks of life interested in science and technology careers, was founded in 1989 by celebrated inventor Dean Kamen.
