Schools Advance To Colorado Destination ImagiNation Tournament April 24

Several DPS schools competed in the Denver Destination ImagiNation Tournament on Saturday, March 6. Winners will represent the Denver Region at the Colorado Destination ImagiNation Tournament on Saturday, April 24 at the University of Denver. The competition challenges were:

Teams competing in DestiNations in Time, where teams built their own timing device, performed some tasks on schedule and told an international story that showed what could happen if they were in charge of time. At the elementary level, the second grade team from Steck Elementary School took second place, and third place was won by Kaleidoscope Corner's Centennial Prospectors. At the middle level, the Merchants of Cool from Henry Middle School took first place.

The Plot and the Pendulum was a challenge where teams created a theatrical presentation featuring two original stories that began the same but had different endings. The teams used a team-invented Plot Diverter - a pendulum that signaled pivotal events that set the stories in motion. Winners at the elementary level were Bromwell Elementary School’s PB&J girls in second place and the Rams from Brown Elementary School in third. At the middle level, Morey Mind Benders from Morey Middle School placed first. At the secondary level, the Inside Jokers from John F. Kennedy High School won first place, and South High School won second place.

Cartoon DImensions challenge was to create an original cartoon story complete with costumes and characters. Each team's three-dimensional cartoon adventure came to life with team-generated sound and visual special effects. Winners at the elementary level were Imagination Magic from Bromwell Elementary School in first place, Fairmont Fantasy from Fairmont Elementary School in second place and Cartoon Maniacs from Eagleton Elementary School in third place. At the middle level, Cyber Crackers from Morey Middle School won first place, and the Naked Mole Rats from Smiley Middle School placed second. Winners from the secondary level were North High School in first place and the Cartoon Heroes from George Washington High School in second place.

UpBeat Improv: Each team had 30 minutes to create a performance full of music. Music styles were randomly selected from a list that ranged from opera to rock and from Celtic to Klesmer. Teams included a surprise characteristic, an improvisational game, and a team-created instrument and presto, each had a harmonious show. At the elementary level, the Masters of Disaster from Teller Elementary School won first place. The Beef Jerkies from Park Hill Elementary School took second place, and the Blues from Grant Ranch won third place. At the middle level, second place went to the UpBEATables from Grant Ranch, and the Posse of Five from Hamilton took third place. At the secondary level, North High School placed first, and two teams from George Washington, Patriot’s Revenge and Requiem of the Patriots, tied for second place.

GuessDImate! teams had to build a structure of wood and glue and estimate how many pounds of weight it would hold. Teams earned bonus pounds if their estimate was close. They had to gather the data they needed by building and breaking many structures until their guesses were on the mark. Using their best GuessDImate, they told the appraisers how much weight their structure could hold BEFORE they placed the weights. Winners at the elementary level were the Generators from Steck in first place and Party Animals from Centennial K-8 in second place. At the middle level, Morey Abridged from Morey took first place and Skinner Middle School won second place. Montbello Players from Montbello High School won first place at the secondary level.
