John F. Kennedy High School Wins Denver Mock Trial Competition; Competes This Week For State Title

Eleven students from John F. Kennedy High School will represent Denver Public Schools in the State Mock Trial Tournament on Friday and Saturday, March 5 and 6 at the Jefferson County courthouse in Golden. Twenty-two teams from Colorado schools will compete in the state meet this week.

JFK beat out CEC Middle College of Denver, Manual Arts and Cultural High School, Denver Academy and Fort Collins High School during a regional tournament on Saturday, Feb. 21.

A three-person panel scored each team on the four rounds of the tournament. Students were scored on a scale of one to 10 based on organization, delivery and statement of facts. The teams received their cases in October, and each team had the same case.

Each team had to prepare arguments for both sides, not knowing which side they would be presenting until right before the tournament began. Both sides are presented twice in the four rounds of the tournament, and the whole trial can take about two hours to present.

If JFK advances to the next round, the school will be competing against teams from around the country May 6-9 in Orlando, FLA.

John F. Kennedy High School is located at 2855 S. Lamar St. The Jefferson County courthouse is located at 100 Jefferson County Parkway. For more information, contact Susan Troger, teacher and JFK Mock Trial Sponsor, at 303-763-4300.
