56 Schools Awarded $375,000 First-Time “Lights On Afterschool!” Grants To Provide Free Programs

Superintendent Jerry Wartgow, Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper and Mile High United Way President Mike Durkin revealed today the first 56 elementary and middle schools to receive $375,000 in all from the initial round of the new “Lights on Afterschool!” fundraising initiative to provide free after school programs in Denver schools.
 
Several schools received “targeted” awards ranging from $500 to $10,000 each and totaling $250,000. Selected schools received “comprehensive” grant awards from $15,000 to $25,000 each and totaling $125,000.

Elementary schools are: Asbury, $2,000; Barrett, $4,500; Beach Court, $10,000; Boys & Girls Club (McGlone), $25,000; Bradley, $3,000; Brown, $4,000; Bryant-Webster, $9,195; Carson, $3,000; Castro, $8,000; Cheltenham, $7,500; Columbine Refocus, $23,000; Crofton, $3,560; Del Pueblo, $3,000; Edison, $3,300; Ellis, $5,000; Fairmont, $4,000; Fairview, $6,000; Force, $2,500; Gilpin, $8,000; Godsman, $500; Grant Ranch, $4,100; Green Valley Ranch, $4,975; Hallett Science / Technology Academy, $8,000; Harrington, $8,000; Johnson, $6,000; Knapp, $4,000; Lincoln, $3,000; Lowry, $2,000; McKinley-Thatcher, $600; Mitchell, $4,875; Montclair, $5,000; Munroe, $8,000; Palmer, $5,000; Park Hill, $1,500; Phillips, $2,050; Remington, $9,900; Rosedale, $3,713; Sandoval Montessori, $4,000; Schenck, $3,120; Smedley, $4,000; Steck, $1,000; Stedman, $4,000; Swansea, $6,000; Teller, $4,000; University Park, $525; and Valverde, $8,000.

Middle schools are: Bruce Randolph, $5,135; Cole (Urban League), $16,100; Grant, $5,000; Horace Mann, $32,461; Kepner, $10,000; Kunsmiller, $7,500; Lake (Mi Casa), $20,000; Martin Luther King, $3,000; Morey, $3,500; and Rishel (Catholic Charities), $22,500.
Funding for these grants came from Mile High United Way, proceeds of the mayoral inauguration, corporate donor Lockheed Martin and individual donors.
 
In the fall, Mile High United Way and the DPS Foundation announced a new partnership aimed at expanding the availability of critical after school programming for elementary and middle school students in DPS. The goal is to raise $10 million over the next five years to expand after school program capacity, providing free after school programming for families.
