$375,000 Awarded To 60 Schools For After School Programs

DPS Superintendent Jerry Wartgow, Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper and Mile High United Way President Mike Durkin will be among those who announce the distribution of $375,000 from the first round of the new “Lights on Afterschool!” fundraising initiative to provide after school programs in Denver schools. The announcement is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 4 at Horace Mann Middle School, 4130 Navajo St.

Several schools will receive “targeted” awards ranging from $500 to $10,000 each and totaling $250,000. Selected schools will receive “comprehensive” grant awards from $15,000 to $25,000 each and totaling $125,000. The Boys & Girls Club serving McGlone Elementary School in the Montbello neighborhood also will receive a grant to support its after school program. Funding for these grants came from Mile High United Way, proceeds of the mayoral inauguration, corporate donor Lockheed Martin and individual donors.

In the fall, Mile High United Way and the DPS Foundation announced a new partnership aimed at expanding the availability of critical after school programming for elementary and middle school students in DPS. The goal is to raise $10 million over the next five years to expand after school program capacity.
