Fairview Elementary Celebrates Dr. Seuss’ 100th “Anni-Seussary” With Sun Valley Community, Denver Broncos; Teller Elementary Signs Up More Readers

On Tuesday, March 2, in conjunction with national “100th Anni-Seussary” celebrations, Fairview Elementary School is planning a full day promoting reading and honoring Dr. Seuss and his works. Setting the tone, Principal Norma Giron will kick off the day with a breakfast of green eggs and ham. Throughout the day at all grade levels, local community leaders and school officials have taken time from their busy schedules to read to students. During the morning sessions, Board of Education Member Elaine Gantz Berman, Mark Brazwell, Denver Department of Human Services (DDHS) and Ben Levik (DDHS) along with Officer Gallegos and a team of police officers from the newly-created Decatur Place Police store-front will read their favorite books to students. Regular lunch breaks have been rescheduled around a “Broncos” assembly at which the Bronco’s former running back Steve Sewell and other team members will show the video “Read Like A Pro,” which, in keeping with the day’s theme, promotes reading. “Miles” the Bronco’s mascot will provide entertainment. Throughout the afternoon, Board of Education Member Theresa Pena; teachers from Rude Park Day Care; employees from Automatic Entrances and Catholic Charities; the Denver Rescue Mission’s CEO/President Brad Meuli, Director of Public Relations Greta Ritchey and VP Development Griff Freyschlag; Thomas Cole and Peggy Sue Allen (DPS Safety & Security); Sue Cobb and Roxanne White (also with DDHS); and other local business leaders will join Northwest Area Superintendent Joe Sandoval and Assistant Superintendent Dave Debus in reading sessions and other activities. During the day, students who participate will have the opportunity to earn a variety of prizes including Dr. Seuss memorabilia and books. Fairview Elementary School is located at 2715 W. 11th Ave. The school’s phone number is 303-623-7193.

Since yesterday’s news release, additional readers have volunteered to read to students at Teller Elementary School on Monday, March 1. More than 55 people will visit the school to read on Monday. Superintendent Jerry Wartgow and Dinger from the Colorado Rockies will arrive at 9:30 a.m., and Board of Education Member Elaine Gantz Berman and City Councilwoman Carol Boigon are reading at 10:30 a.m. “We are so excited that so many people said yes to our invitation,” said Cathey Bonnefoi of Teller Elementary School. The school is located at 1150 Garfield St. The phone number is 303-333-4285.
