Students from Whiteman Elementary School will perform in “Dancing and Drawing a Story: Experiences With Movement and Visual Literacy,” at 3:45 p.m. on Thursday, March 4 and Friday, March 5 presented by PlatteForum, a 16-month-old art center in Denver’s new South Platte Riverfront neighborhood. The nonprofit center sponsors exhibitions, artist residencies and outreach activities for disadvantaged youths.
The students are being directed by this month’s PlatteForum “creative resident,” Sandra Minton, the seventh artist to serve in that position. At the end of each residency, the children and artists stage a public exhibition to showcase their collaboration. These performances will be the final version of their dance.
For the past month, Minton and teachers and students have been poring over textbooks, coming up with ideas for choreographing movements to demonstrate such rational concepts as Washington’s love of mathematics.
Whiteman Elementary School is located at 451 Newport St. The phone number is 303-355-7333. PlatteForum is located at 1610 Little Raven St., Suite 125. For more information, contact PlatteForum at 303-893-0791.
