Two DPS students are among 10 selected to receive the Hispanic Annual Salute scholarship. Leticia Hernandez of North High School and Daisy Cortez of West High School will be honored at the 24th Annual Awards Dinner at the Denver Center for Performing Arts on Saturday, March 13.
Each student has participated in over 1,000 hours of volunteer service in many areas. Cortez has volunteered for the Ronald McDonald House, Junior Achievement and homeless shelters. Every Saturday for the past seven years she has volunteered as a Catechism teacher for St. Cajetan’s Church.
Hernandez has been involved with AIDS Walk, Project Angel Heart, T-Shirts for Troops, the Colorado Arts Festival and Quarters For Kids. She has volunteered her time to work on a political campaign for State Representative Shawn Mitchell.
Nominees have performed notable volunteer contributions to the Hispanic community; specifically unpaid volunteer activity not related to school requirements and must be seniors with a 2.5 GPA or higher.
The Hispanic Annual Salute “seeks to promote and encourage volunteerism, support postsecondary education, and foster unity, and loyalty among Hispanics.” Students and adults are eligible to receive the award. Student recipients are given a $2,000 college scholarship.
