Six DPS Seniors Qualify As Presidential Scholars

Six DPS high school seniors have qualified for the prestigious 2004 Presidential Scholars Program. The program was established in 1964 to recognize and honor some of the nation’s most distinguished graduating seniors.

A selection of 2,600 academic candidates is made based on SAT and ACT test scores. Each year 141 students are chosen from among outstanding graduating seniors to become Presidential Scholars, one of the nation’s highest honors for high school students.

Adam Brock and Alex C. Horne attend East High School and Hannah R. Chazin, Brian S. Davidson, William Eucker and Jaime N. Latcham attend George Washington High School.

“Their nominations affirm what our school, the district, our state and many schools nationally recognize about the IB (International Baccalaureate Program) and its effectiveness in preparing young people for contributions in life beyond high school,” said Mario Williams, George Washington High School principal.

Five of the students applied to the next round in the program to be chosen as semi-finalists. Five hundred semifinalists are chosen in April and the scholars are announced early May. Scholars are awarded an expenses paid trip to Washington, DC in June to participate in National Recognition Week, which includes many enrichment activities and events and cumulates with the presentation to the students a medallion during a ceremony sponsored by the White House.

George Washington High School is located at 655 S. Monaco St. The phone number is 303-394-8600. East High School is located at 1545 Detroit St. The phone number is 303-394-8300.
