Denver Juvenile Court will hold a regular day of proceedings at Kepner Middle School on Friday, Feb. 27. The courtroom will be set up in the school auditorium.
"Denver Juvenile Court has kindly agreed to move its operations for the day to Kepner as a way to help students have a real-life glimpse into the courtroom proceedings," said Irma Anthony, program manager for Social Work Services in Denver Public Schools. "We also expect that this will elevate the awareness among parents and students about the importance of school attendance and the consequences of being truant."
The day will begin with remarks from Juvenile Court Judge Dana Wakefield at 9:15 a.m.
At 10 a.m. Magistrate Kathy Janski will preside over a docket with 13 petitions and one sentencing hearing. At 11 a.m. she will preside over another docket with 11 petitions. A lunch break is scheduled for noon followed by Magistrate Dave Furman presiding over another docket (cases not yet set) at 1 p.m.
The day also will include a presentation to students and parents about truancy at 8:45 a.m. In addition, various city agencies will be on hand to provide information. Those agencies include the Conflict Center, the DPS Homeless Program, Special Education, Judi's House, Safe Cities for Juvenile Diversion, Mental Health Corp. of Denver and Servicios de la Raza.
