Book Exchange, Author Contest, Art Show, Sock Hop Among School Valentine’s Day Celebrations

Asbury Elementary School is hosting its eighth annual Valentine’s Sock Hop from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13. Grab your valentine, wear your finest 50’s outfit, and join the school for hotdogs and pizza while twisting the night away to a real 50’s DJ. There will be a limbo contest, hula hoop contest and cake walk. Attendees can have their photo taken with the cool “Asbury Car.” Students must have an adult with them to attend. Admission is $5 for the whole family. Food and soda pop are an additional, minimal charge. Asbury Elementary School is located at 1320 E. Asbury Ave. The phone number is 303-722-4695.

Bromwell Elementary School and the Show of Hands Gallery present the fifth annual sale of original Valentine’s Day cards made by kindergarten through fifth-grade students. Valentines will be on sale at the Show of Hands Gallery (210 Clayton St.) for $3. Valentines showcase the art techniques of printing and collage. The show runs through Saturday, Feb. 14. All the proceeds from the valentines this year will be donated to Adam’s Camp, a non-profit organization providing therapeutic programs for children with special needs and their families. Bromwell Elementary School is located at 2500 E. 4th Ave. For more information, contact Julia Shepherd at the school, 303-388-5969.

As an alternative to the traditional Valentine's Day celebration, Cory Elementary School fourth- and fifth-graders will be exchanging gently used, favorite books with each other. Students will select a book they have at home that they would like to share with a friend. The fourth-graders will exchange their books at 2:30 p.m. Friday Feb. 13. The fifth-grade students will be taking the idea further as they incorporate the valentine theme into an introduction to their upcoming Shakespeare unit. Throughout the day on Friday, the students will watch the animated version of Romeo and Juliet, read a couple of Shakespeare's sonnets and maybe attempt to write one. Cory Elementary School is located at 1550 S. Steele St. The phone number is 303-744-2726.

At Kaiser Elementary School, the week of Feb. 9 to 13 is “Love the Books Week.” The school is having an author contest for the students. Each valentine heart has a picture of an author and five clues. Students then figure out who the author is and the title of a book that the author wrote. There are different authors for different grade levels - four for Early Childhood Education and kindergarten, eight authors for grades one through three, and 10 authors for grades four through six. If the students cannot figure out who the authors are, they must go to the library and do research. The students turn in their completed ballots in the library and prizes will be given on Friday, Feb. 13. Kaiser Elementary School is located at 4500 S. Quitman St. The phone number is 303-795-6014.
