Morey Middle School Instrumental Music Students Headed For Disney Trip; Fundraiser Event Thursday, Feb. 26

Morey Middle School instrumental music students have been invited to take advantage of an unforgettable, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to participate in the “Disney Magic Music Days” activities at Disneyland in Anaheim, California in April, 2004.

Both the band and the orchestra were selected, on the basis of a videotaped audition and color photograph, to perform at the Plaza Gardens Stage at the heart of Disneyland on April 15. Each group will further participate in a workshop at the Disney backstage recording studio called “Soundtrack Session: Instrumental.”

Students will step into a sound studio for a simulated film recording session complete with video playback, headphones and click track. A Disneyland Resort musical director treats students as if they were studio musicians hired to sight-read and bring to life the score of various Disney film segments. In this hands-on learning laboratory, the high standards of musicianship and professional work ethic are taught in a manner that can be related to many other careers and educational pursuits. The workshop ends with a viewing of the animated segment combined with the student-recorded track. Morey will receive a copy of the video to take home.

The trip to California will cost each participant around $600. The ultimate goal of the Morey band parents and director is to leave “no child behind” for financial reasons. Students have been working on several fundraisers to generate the revenue needed for the trip. They have held a yard sale, sold items from the Cherrydale Farms gift catalog, made and sold candles, and performed in downtown Denver at the Christkindl Market.

The groups are currently working on a “Fiesta Mexicana” fundraising dinner, with student performers and waiters, and a silent auction. The fiesta will be held Thursday, Feb. 26 from 5:30 – 9:00 p.m. at Tesquino’s Restaurant, 670 W. 84th Ave. The evening will include a professional mariachi group, Morey musicians and Morey waiters, lots of great door prizes and fabulous food. Adults are $20 each; children under 13 are $10.

To find out more about how to support the Morey trip or for more information about it, please contact Lorrie Baum, Morey Director of Instrumental Music, at 303-832-1139, ext. 2209. Morey Middle School is located at 840 E. 14th Ave.
