Special Recognition For Denver Public Schools From Gov. Bill Owens During State Of The State Address Today

Singling out DPS Superintendent Jerry Wartgow and Columbine Elementary School Principal Janice Spearman from the audience during today’s State of the State address, Governor Bill Owens commended Denver Public Schools as a district on the move.

“We are particularly proud of the record of the Denver Public Schools,” said Governor Owens during his annual address before the Colorado legislature.

As one example of the many schools making progress throughout the district, Governor Owens praised Columbine Elementary School Principal Janice Spearman for her school’s earning the Governor’s Distinguished Improvement Award this year. “Janice, thanks for what you’re doing for our children – thanks very much,” the Governor said.

Earning a “significant improvement” rating on the 2003 School Accountability Reports, Columbine Elementary School is among 20 Denver schools that moved out of the “unsatisfactory” category to which they initially were assigned by the state three years ago.

Governor Owens also recognized Superintendent Jerry Wartgow.

“Janice is joined today by Dr. Jerry Wartgow, who is the Superintendent of Denver Public Schools, and I am proud of the fact that Jerry started his education career working within our own state community college system,” said Governor Owens. “I appreciate your leadership as well.”
