| East High School Principal Kathy Callum has announced plans to completely renovate the school’s library on the third floor. The library, which opened in 1925, has undergone minor renovations, but none that will bring the site back to its original glory as is hoped in the current plan. The striking East High School building, located on the City Park Esplanade, is a true landmark for the entire community. The school is patterned after Independence Hall in Philadelphia and was granted Denver Landmark Status on Feb. 4, 1991 because of its architectural significance.
In an age that is often careless with tradition, East is embarking on several projects to maintain and improve the historic and aesthetic beauty of the campus. The East Library Renaissance Project has been initiated to refurbish the library’s original classic architectural details and maintain its historic significance. A master plan to maintain and enhance the school’s campus, grounds and facilities is also being developed. Working with the community, it is the school’s hope that the grounds will be more useful to the community and the East students.
The ambitious upgrade of the campus is a continuation of the East High School’s community’s successful auditorium project, which in 2001 returned the performing arts complex in the school to its original grandeur. American artists such as Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., Don Cheadle and Judy Collins have walked East High as students and performed on its stage. The project restored the stage, exposed original stained glass by removing the auditorium’s acoustical tile, upgraded the electrical and sound system, and replaced the splintered 1925 era auditorium seats.
Kathy Callum, principal and herself an East graduate says, “East High School is in the heart of the city at the confluence of City Park, 17th Avenue and Colfax Avenue and is the jewel of Denver public high schools.”
Several events are scheduled to support East High School and the Library Renaissance Project. On Wednesday, Feb. 18, a free kick-off event for the East High Angel Foundation will be held at East from 5:30 to 8 p.m. with Mayor John Hickenlooper as the guest of honor. On Tuesday, March 9, a fundraising event will be held at East High as well with catering provided by Bistro Boys. To support the East Library Renaissance Project, make reservations to attend the March 9 event.
