| The students and staff at Westerly Creek Elementary will hold a special assembly to honor Martin Luther King, Jr. at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14. The event is the culmination of varied studies at each grade level. Each class will make its unique contribution to the program.
The kindergarten class will present the song “A Man Named King;” first-graders will present the poem “Dreams” by Langston Hughes; second-graders will perform a choral reading of “All the Colors of the Earth;” third-graders will perform the chant “The Golden Rule;” and fourth- and fifth-grade classes have prepared a choral reading, poem “I, Too” by Langston Hughes, and Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech.
The program also will include guest speaker Rev. Robert Martin, Jr., assistant pastor at Zion Temple Pentecostal Church, who will present the life and legacy of Dr. King. A guest performance by Ms. Roslynn Washington will include a recitation and excerpts of Dr. King’s writing.
“This is the first celebration of Dr. King’s life and legacy in the new school and community at Stapleton,” said Westerly Creek Elementary School principal Trish Kuhn. “The focus is less on student performances and activities and more on what Dr. King’s example and own words can mean for character and community building for the new Stapleton redevelopment, including lessons from his life such as courage and determination; being good to people when they are unfair to you; working for your dreams; and how important community is.”
Students will each write a reflective essay on what they learn from this week.
