P.S.1 Charter School Students Invite Public To Theatre Piece On Sand Creek Massacre

The community is invited to join the Political Theatre: The Sand Creek Massacre class at P.S.1 Charter School as students retell the events of Sand Creek and the issues that arise from that event. Staged readings of the script, written by students, are scheduled from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, Dec. 10 through 12 at P.S.1 Charter School. The public is invited to discuss and give feedback on the script. A final staged reading will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 16. The cooking class from P.S.1 will be providing appetizers and refreshments.

The year is 1864. While the Civil War is raging in the East, settlers out West have their own troubles. They’re in the city of Denver, and the only way to travel is by wagon, but that’s not always very safe. Wagons are being attacked, and the Colorado territory is trying to become a state, but how can settlers get people to come to this place if they don’t feel safe?

On Nov. 29, 1864, a man named John Milton Chivington led a volunteer army of troops to the plains of Colorado. At dawn they brutally murdered and mutilated a peaceful village of Cheyenne and Arapaho Indians. The majority of the dead were women, children and elderly. In the end, no one was officially punished.

P.S.1 Charter School is a small community of junior and high school students (grades six through 12). Most of the students who attend are independent and actively involved in the community. The school strives to ensure that all students are empowered, compassionate and contributing individuals who are informed and aware, happy and healthy, and have a passion for life-long learning. The school offers a comprehensive, challenging academic curriculum and personal development program for students and actively engages students in individual and group projects and learning experiences that take them outside the classroom, primarily in downtown Denver, but also to other parts of the U.S., Latin America and Africa, to have them become proactive, ethical citizens in the Denver community.

P.S.1 Charter School is located at 1062 Delaware St. For more information, contact Petra Ulrych at the school, 303-575-6690 extension 241 or at pertais@earthlink.net.
