| Skinner Middle School celebrated the 2003 Thanksgiving season by presenting the Skinner C.A.R.E.S. Awards to seven caring students. The Skinner C.A.R.E.S. Awards, given Monday, Dec. 1, recognize students who live out Skinner’s Vision Statement.
Skinner C.A.R.E.S. represents the school’s commitment to creating a caring family, achieving academic excellence, respect and responsibility, ensuring fairness and safety, and standards proficiency. Skinner C.A.R.E.S. communicates a clear message of how students and faculty should treat one another and portray themselves at school and in the community.
Teacher Luz Torres nominated Honor Roll students Jesús Méndez and Mariela Pérez. Torres writes that Jesús always works well in class and demonstrates a great effort to learn. She describes Mariela as a student who is always willing to help others, so much so that her teachers turn to her for help in assisting other students.
Seventh grader Michael Hernandez was nominated by two teachers and a fellow student. Jesus Gamboa, his peer, shares that, “Michael creates a good environment. He cares more about our class than himself.” Teacher Michelle Dugarte states that María Retana maintains a healthy level of competition with her peers by always striving to succeed and help classmates succeed as well. María has a desire to learn and not merely complete her work for a grade. The Buffalo Core Team Teachers nominated Anastasia Garth. They write: “Anastasia is always very friendly, courteous, and helpful to everyone. She has been especially helpful to a new student.”
Vy Tai is an eighth-grader who was nominated by teacher Jamie True. She writes that, “Vy pushes her academic abilities to the edge. She asks questions and she is always ready for the next challenge.” The Tiger Core Team teachers describe Johnny Cabazos as demonstrating great citizenship with peers and teachers. He does not settle for half-hearted work, he strives for perfect work.”
Skinner Middle School developed the Skinner C.A.R.E.S. Awards to recognize the positive behaviors of students. Skinner strives to create a safe and caring learning environment in the school. By acknowledging the good things kids do, the school reinforces positive behaviors and a nurturing environment where students can focus on learning.
