| For the fifth consecutive year, the South High School Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (JROTC) took the State Rifle Championship title at the competition in Pueblo this past weekend. Team members were Laura Martinez, Ashi Kitchlew, Rachel Aceves and Sophia Sokolowski.
Two other teams from South High School finished in the top six. Individually, the school had four of the top 10 shooters in the state competition.
The South High School team also won both the men's and women's City Rifle League titles with undefeated seasons. The women's team has not lost a league match in over seven years and has compiled 66 consecutive victories over the nine other DPS schools in the league. The South High School men's team has won the league championship two of the past three years.
For the ninth consecutive year, South High School won the Centennial Marksmanship Trophy, which is given to the school that had the best success in the Denver JROTC Brigade in Rifle Marksmanship.
For the first time this year, the DPS JROTC units sponsored a Novice Tournament for students who had practiced all year but did not have the opportunity to shoot in competition in the Rifle League. South High School entered three teams and took first and third place in the team competition. South High School shooters took the top three individual honors and had seven of the top 15 in that category.
