“Reading Police” Coming To Oakland Elementary School Thursday, Nov. 20; Police Chief To Present $500 Grant

The Reading Police is a program sponsored by the Denver Police Department and its corporate partner ICG Communications. Denver police officers assigned to District 5 are visiting Oakland Elementary School twice each month to promote literacy by reading select stories to kindergarten and first-grade classes.

In addition to the visits by the officers, ICG Communications will donate a $500 "John Weber Book Grant" - named after the outgoing commander for District 5 - to the school for the purchase of books for the school's library. A presentation of the grant by Chief Gerald Whitman and incoming commander Tracie Keesee will be made at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 20 in rooms 105 and 106.

“Students and staff are extremely excited about this opportunity to spend time with District 5 officers to promote DPS literacy goals and enhance an already positive partnership,” says Oakland principal John Gutierrez. “The grant will provide an opportunity to expand the number of books for students as part of our classroom libraries.”

Oakland Elementary School is located at 4580 Dearborn St. For more information, please call 303-371-2960.
