| As part of its Million Words Campaign, students, staff and families at Whittier Elementary are celebrating National Children's Book Week, Nov. 17-21.
A variety of classroom and school activities have been planned for the week. Classrooms will come together to share favorite books with each other today (Nov. 17). There will be a school-wide "Drop Everything and Read" time Tuesday, Nov. 18. Guest readers from throughout the school and community will visit classrooms to read to students and discuss their own reading throughout the week but many of them are coming on Wednesday, Nov. 19. On Thursday, Nov. 20 classrooms will be sharing their book cover designs and voting on which to enter in the school-wide competition. The week will culminate with a whole school book exchange. And, finally, Whittier's Scholastic Book Fair is also being held this week (Monday and Tuesday, Nov. 17 and 18).
“All these activities will help build and strengthen our community of readers, and will move us closer to our million-word goal,” says Whittier’s literacy coach, Keith Millner. “We thank all our students, staff and families for helping to make our Children's Book Week celebration a success.”
