Board of Education Names Les Woodward President; Swears In New Members

At a special meeting yesterday, the Denver Board of Education elected Les Woodward to serve as the new Board President until November 2005. Woodward has been serving on the Board as at-large member since 2001.

In addition, three Board members were sworn in: returning Board member Lucia Guzman, District 5 (northwest Denver); new Board member Bruce Hoyt, District 1 (southeast Denver); and Theresa Peña, who was elected to the Board’s second at-large seat. Peña had been serving on the Board since June 2003, having been appointed by the Board to fill the remainder of James Mejia’s term through the beginning of this month.

Lucia Guzman will continue to serve as Vice President, and Kevin Patterson will continue to serve as Treasurer. Michelle Moss will serve as Secretary, replacing Sue Edwards, whose second term on the Board ended yesterday.

The Board recognized outgoing member Sue Edwards yesterday during the special meeting.

“Everyday for the past eight and a half years, Sue has demonstrated her deep dedication to the students and employees of DPS by visiting classrooms, attending school functions, sporting events and community activities,” said Board member Elaine Gantz Berman.

Superintendent Jerry Wartgow described Edwards as a head cheerleader and A+ Board member. “Sue’s fondness for schools is matched by an in-depth knowledge of district issues,” he said.

2003-2004 members of the Denver Board of Education are:

  1. President: Les Woodward, (at-large)
  2. Vice President: Lucia Guzman, District 5 (northwest Denver)
  3. Treasurer, Kevin Patterson, District 4 (northeast Denver)
  4. Secretary, Michelle Moss, District 2 (southwest Denver)
  5. Elaine Gantz Berman, District 3 (east-central Denver)
  6. Bruce Hoyt, District 1 (southeast Denver)
  7. Theresa Peña, (at-large)

There are seven members on the Denver Board of Education. Five are elected by voters within five districts; two are elected at-large by voters across the entire city. Board members serve staggered, four-year terms, so no more than three board members are elected at any one time.

The Denver Board of Education is the policy-making body for the district. Its powers and duties are established by state law. Board members are not paid; they give freely of their time to serve the community.

On the first Thursday of each month, the Board holds public hearings, and any interested community member may bring an issue to the Board. To sign up to speak, call 720-423-3210 by 4 p.m. on the first Thursday of each month.
