Organic Peach Farmer Mas Masumoto, Author Of “Four Seasons In Five Senses,” Visits Fairview Elementary School Friday, Oct. 10

Literacy and gardening will be on the agenda Friday, Oct. 10 when farmer and author Mas Masumoto visits Fairview Elementary School.

The connection between Fairview and Masumoto is a natural because the school’s fifth grade classroom and teacher Don Diehl have been working with Denver Urban Gardens for about four years. The class has been learning about gardening and good nutrition with Denver Urban Gardens using nutrition curriculum from the CU Health Sciences Center. Fairview is home to a community garden where the students and teachers get down and dirty. During cold weather months, an indoor garden is home to seedlings and other projects.

Masumoto’s book, “Four Seasons in Five Senses,” is about the art of slow farming and takes readers into the fields to witness the cycle of the harvest. Masumoto’s message is about savoring the world around us.

Masumoto will be at Fairview all morning, having breakfast first with students at 8:45 a.m. Beginning at about 9 a.m., Denver Urban Gardens representatives will lead Masumoto and students out to the garden where they will work together for about an hour. At about 10 a.m., Masumoto will work in the classroom with students on writing.

Students have been preparing by making all kinds of peach recipes in the school kitchen and reading “James and the Giant Peach.”

“This is a fabulous way of getting sensory writing started for our students,” said Diehl.

Fairview Elementary School is located at 2715 W. 11th Ave. The school telephone number is 303-623-7193.
