Fairview Elementary Students To Read Original Poetry At Starbucks; Denver SCORES Presented With $20,000 Check

From 4:30-5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, about 15 Fairview Elementary School students ages 8 to eleven will read their original poetry at the Starbucks store at 303 16th St. (16th & Tremont) in downtown Denver.

In addition, the Starbucks Foundation will award a check for $20,000 to Denver SCORES. SuperShuttle Denver will generously donate transportation for students.

Denver SCORES is a recreationally-linked youth development program where public elementary school students participate in soccer and creative writing activities during after-school hours. It is the only after-school program in the city to use soccer, the world’s most popular sport, to inspire literacy and health among urban public elementary school students. An affiliate of the national organization America SCORES, Denver SCORES operates in eight north and west Denver public elementary schools, employs 32 DPS teachers as writing teachers and soccer coaches and serves more than 250 boys and girls every day after school. Starbucks has supported America SCORES since 1997.

Established in 1997, the mission of the Starbucks Foundation is to create hope, discovery and opportunity in communities where Starbucks lives and works. Inspired in part by Jonathan Kozol’s 1995 book “Amazing Grace”, about the life of children in the South Bronx, the Foundation supports efforts to aid less fortunate populations. In recognition of the rich historical associations between coffeehouses and reading, literacy is the initial service focus.
