| The artwork of 32 art students from Place Middle School has been selected for display at the Pirate Contemporary Art Oasis and at the Chicano Humanities and Art Council. With the instruction of S. A. Bennett, Place art teacher, the students have created paintings to portray the cultural significance of Dia de Los Muertos.
The group of students includes Khalae Adams, Francisco Garcia, Patrick Meyers, Jaime Rojos, Catherine Castillo, Sanchir Gantulga, Brianda Munoz, Allyssa Routzahn, Conor Coleman, Ingrid Hoff, Alisa Nguyen, Dave Sanchez, Faith Crippen, Philip Karr, Isidro Ochoa, Julio Sanchez, Daniel Crookston, Agnessa Koyenova, John Patton, Sean Snyder, Chris Filus, Victor Johnson, Erika Paul, Karen Sotelo, Matt Francis, Laramie Lagasca, Levi Peterson, Ashley Talebi-Pugh, Ashley Gamez, Martin Leece, Latoya Rambeau, Shekirah Watson.
Pirate Gallery is located at 3659 Navajo St.; CHAC is located at 772 Santa Fe. Both exhibits will run for two weeks.
In addition, the work of Tim Maynes, a seventh-grade student at Place, was chosen for the cover of the program for the Southeast Area Choices Night. That event will be held Wednesday, Nov. 19 at South High School. Tim’s colorful painting is a representation of seasonal leaves and had been displayed at the Southeast Area Office. His art teacher is S. A. Bennett.
And finally, Place Middle School has formed a community partnership with Washington Mutual, located at Evans and Monaco. Washington Mutual and the Colorado History Museum have co-sponsored Home of the Free, a photojournalism project for middle school students in 20 Denver area schools; Place and Morey represented the Denver Public Schools. As part of the project, students submitted pictures of community officials at work.
The student photographers will be honored at a reception at The Colorado History Museum on Thursday, Nov. 13 at 6 p.m. Winning entries will be displayed at the Museum, and other entries will be hung at the local Washington Mutual offices. Place student photographers included Felecia Adams, Kylie Cooper, Sonja Harley, Adam Shukers-Stegamen, and Daylan Simkavitz. Staff sponsors for the project are Tiffany Burkle and Jacqueline Hilgen.
