DSA Department of Vocal Music Faculty Recital Saturday, Sept. 13

The Denver School of the Arts (DSA) Department of Vocal Music presents a Voice Faculty Recital at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13. The recital will feature the four members of the vocal music faculty – Scott Shively, Traci Kern, Amy Broken Leg and Terri Metcalf – and accomplished accompanist Chuck Koslowske.

The recital will take place in the Concert Hall housed in the beautiful, new home of DSA, located at 7111 Montview Blvd. Admission is free.

Entering his sixth year as Director of Vocal Music at DSA, Scott Shively has numerous performing credits as well as educational accolades. In addition to teaching Private Studio Voice and administrating the Department of Vocal Music, he also directs the Treble Choir, the Chorale and 4². His degrees include a Bachelor of Music in Choral-General Music from Arizona State University and a Master of Music in Voice Performance from the University of Colorado at Boulder. He has taught at the middle school, high school and university level for a total of 17 years and has maintained a private voice studio. Besides singing, Shively is an accomplished vocal accompanist.

Traci Kern is beginning her second year in the Vocal Music Department at DSA and will be teaching Private Voice lessons, Voice classes and the Musical Theater class as well as conducting Bellissima. She received her Bachelor of Music Degree in Vocal Performance from the University of South Dakota and her Master’s Degree in Vocal Performance from the University of Northern Colorado. She was also a member of the voice faculty at Colorado Christian University. After living and performing in and around New York City for two years, she returned to Colorado in 2002. Kern has been a guest clinician at a number of middle and high schools throughout the country and has also maintained a private voice studio.

Amy Broken Leg is excited to begin her sixth year with the Voice Faculty of DSA. She is a versatile performer who has been heard in many recitals, concerts and shows throughout Colorado and California. Broken Leg is currently preparing the role of Madama Butterfly for the Denver Opera Company and will be presenting a guest artist recital at Colorado State University in Fort Collins this coming spring. She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from the Master’s College in Santa Clarita, Calif.

Terri Metcalf is beginning her third year at DSA and will be teaching Voice lessons and Voice Classes to Vocal Music Majors as a Resident Artist. She brings an extensive performance and teaching background to DSA, as well as being a DSA Vocal Music Parent. In addition, Metcalf works as a Vocational Counselor at Front Range Community College.
Students accepted as Majors into the Vocal Music Department at DSA are placed into a choir that meets daily for approximately 90 minutes. Within that time period, students receive instruction in vocal technique, choral methods, sight-singing, music theory and solo performance techniques.

In addition to choral activities, high school students are required to take private voice lessons. Middle school students participate in a weekly “Solo Day” during class while high school students participate in a weekly recital or Music Convocation. High school students also have the opportunity to sing solos in quarterly Master Classes and Senior Recitals. Some students choose to take lessons on campus, while others secure their teacher elsewhere.

Middle school level majors consist of approximately 35 singers in the sixth, seventh and eighth grades. All voices, including boys, sing in the treble (high) range. This choir is considered the training choir for the High School Vocal Music program. Repertoire is selected from an intermediate to advanced level.

Freshman and sophomore level girls are singers in Bellissima (Italian word meaning “very beautiful.”) This group is comprised of approximately twenty singers and performs three- and four-part choral music. The choir sings advanced repertoire for women.

This mixed ensemble consists of approximately 40 singers and is comprised of girls in grades 10 through 12 and boys (with changed voices) in grades 8 through 12. The choir sings advanced SATB choral repertoire.
