Federal Courts To Sponsor Civic Education Event, “Working For Justice: Careers In The Courts,” For High School Students

Reservations are being accepted for participation in a daylong civic education event at the Byron White U.S. Courthouse, 1823 Stout St., in downtown Denver.

This annual program is part of a long-term commitment by the federal courts to share in the civic education of high school students who are making the passage to adult citizenship. The 2003 program introduces students to the structure, function and operations of the federal courts by means of a career day. This year’s theme is Working for Justice: Careers in the Courts.

On Wednesday, Nov. 12 some 5,000 high school seniors in more than 60 communities across the nation will meet at local federal courthouses. They will participate in a scripted mock trial and sentencing, joining with their adult counterparts in playing the courtroom roles.

Judicial system staff from behind-the-scenes, such as, judges, court staff, lawyers, probation and pretrial services representatives and others, will be involved in the program and will allow students to experience various aspects of their jobs. The adjournment ceremony will highlight a brief talk about the most important job in the judicial system - the job of jury service.

This event is designed to teach about the structure and operations of the federal courts and the judicial system in an interesting and interactive way, put a human face on the judicial system, and make students aware of career opportunities and of what preparation is necessary.

Educators must agree to participate in a Teachers Institute that will prepare them to teach a required lesson plan about the differences between state and federal courts, along with an overview of the federal courts, in their classrooms as a prerequisite to the program. Options may be available for court staff to serve as classroom resources when teaching the lesson.

Space is limited for the program, and a registration form is required. Participants will be selected on a first-come, first-served basis. The deadline for registration is Friday, Oct. 3, 2003. For a registration form or additional information, please contact: Linda Rivas, Director of Public Education, U.S. Courts for the Tenth Circuit at 303-335-2830 or education@ca10.uscourts.gov.
