Alfredo Escobedo, a fourth-grade student at Smedley Elementary School, has been selected as one of the top three winners of the first annual Colorado Rockies Youth Writing Contest in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Awareness.

Alfredo's essay about a role model or mentor in his life will be printed in the September Rockies Magazine, and he will be honored on the field prior to the Sunday, Sept. 21 Colorado Rockies game.

Alfredo and his family, his teachers Rene Duran and Dan Escobar, and principals Marsha Chavez and Mark Hernandez will be guests at the game.
