One of the most prized collections of multicultural resources in Denver will be showcased on Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 16 and 17. The Alma Project will open its doors to community members, local authors, poets, official partners with the Alma Project and DPS staff for a private viewing of one of the most impressive collections of books by people of color, about people of color, in any school district across the country.
The collection is housed in a secure area where it can be viewed by appointment only. The 650 book titles, specially crafted flutes and ocarinas, videos and cassettes comprise the magnificent Alma Project library. On Sept. 16 and 17, guided tours will showcase the seven years of work by the Alma Project to integrate the ethnic culture and history of DPS students in the K-12 curriculum. The percentage of minority students in Denver Public Schools is 80 percent.
The Alma Project provides valuable resources to teachers in primary grades through twelfth-grade who, in many cases, reserve the materials a year in advance to ensure getting the rich array of resources that enables them to teach a more inclusive curriculum.
For more information and location of guided tour, call Loyola A. Martinez, Director of the Alma Project at 720-423-3739 or email alma_project@dpsk12.org. |
