The groundbreaking ceremony for the learning landscape project at Castro Elementary School, 845 S. Lowell Blvd., will take place at 9:15 a.m. on Monday, May 12.

The learning landscape will feature newstructures and areas for alternative activities that will aid in the total development of a well-rounded and prepared child. Students will also be able to learn about plants and wildlife with new gardens such as the riparian garden and the color and herb garden.

One feature of the new playground will be a shade structure with seat walls that create a gathering area in the center of the play area. Students will make tiles to decorate the walls and to add color to the space.
