Friday will be a hole day for students at Baker Middle School.
The vast majority of the school’s student body has read the book “Holes” by Louis Sachar as part of the school’s new literacy program. On Friday, May 9 the school will view a 10:20 a.m. screening of the movie version of the story and then return for classroom-by-classroom discussion to compare what they saw to the book.
More than 300 students will leave Baker Middle School about 9:30 a.m. for the screening at the Colorado Center movie complex at I-25 and Colorado Blvd. Students should be back in classes about 12:30 p.m. or so for classroom discussions.
“Our students have been working extraordinarily hard on their reading skills and comprehension,” said school literacy coordinator Roger A. Chow. “The chance to see a film version of the story and discuss it together will give them a chance to reinforce some of the main themes and interesting character discussions that students have been holding in class.”
The story is about an unusual juvenile detention where boys are forced to dig identical holes in the desert.
