Smith Elementary School Students To Host Film Festival Featuring Short Films Created Entirely By Fourth And Fifth Graders

Playing every Hollywood role from stage crew to producer, fourth and fifth grade students at Smith Elementary School, 3590 Jasmine St., have created short films that will be shown to an audience at the Smith Elementary 2003 Film Festival at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 3. Tickets are free and will be available at the door the night of the show.

Students started with a good story, then made sets, props and characters out of a variety of materials. They modified their story to a script or “screenplay” then filmed it with a digital video camera. Even the special effects and music were added by the students themselves. Final editing was performed in Smith’s computer lab.

“My students put a lot of effort and imagination into these films,” said Rob Roscini, the visual arts teacher at Smith Elementary. “No one should come to the show expecting big-budget performances like you see at the movie theatres, but it will be great fun. And, you never know when a future Steven Spielberg will cross your path!”

All of the films have been compiled into one video CD, complete with interactive menus and extras, such as behind-the-scenes footage. Also, selected productions will be broadcast on the DPS cable channel this summer. For more information, contact Rob Roscini at 303-388-1658 or Rob_Roscini@dpsk12.org.
