Whiteman Elementary School To Host International Market

Hola! Hello! Ciao! Konnichiwa! Zdravstvuyte! Sawatdee! Guten tag! Bon jour!

On Tuesday, May 27, Whiteman Elementary School, 451 Newport St., will host its annual International Market. Parents and neighbors are invited to attend.

This year, each classroom or grade level has studied a specific country, learning about the people, customs, traditions, traditional clothing, native foods, etc.

For the market, classrooms set up booths featuring what they’ve learned about their countries - flags, clothes, money, sports and customs. Also on display will be all of the crafts created by students throughout the year. Previous crafts have included fish kites from Japan, flags in a variety of shapes and sizes, morpho butterfly rings from Brazil and rain sticks from Australia. Food choices are creative: fish and chips for Australia are really shoe-string French fries and goldfish crackers; cut up dried fruit represents the luscious fruit of the rainforest areas, etc.

The students spend money - Whiteman Tiger Bucks - as they tour the market. They all have “passports” that are stamped at every country they visit. They get to learn about places they might be able to visit one day; they also get souvenirs to remind them of their trip around the world.
