Emerson Street School Students To Work This Week On Dinosaur Bones Excavated From Colorado Quarry

From 10:30-11:25 a.m. and 1:10-2:05 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, May 20, 21 and 22 students from Emerson Street School, 835 East 18th Ave., will be working on dinosaur bones excavated from the HupsLowell Quarry in Western Colorado. Emerson Street School is one of the few schools in the nation that allows students to work with real dinosaur bones.

The students will experience first-hand how field paleontologists work - from the removal of discovered bones, to the preparation of bones, to the identification of bones. Upon completion, they will send the bones to the Museum of Western Colorado in Fruita, where they will be studied and possibly put on display.

This is a very unique opportunity for students. The fossil bones are rare, and many of the bones found are prepared only by experienced museum staff members.

Emerson Street School is a middle and high school program for students who are expelled, on probation or involved with the Department of Human Services.  The school serves grades seven through twelve.

For information, contact Kent Hups, 303-832-1036 extension 2238 or kent_hups@dpsk12.org.
