Community Members Invited To Explore New School Search Web Site Wednesday, March 19 At Merrill Middle School

Parents and all community members are invited to the computer lab at Merrill Middle School on Wednesday, March 19 to explore the district’s new on-line guide to school reports. The computer lab will be open from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Interested community members should plan on spending 15 or 20 minutes learning about how to use the new Web site and may arrive anytime during the two hours. A Spanish translator will also be available. Merrill Middle School is located at 1551 S. Monroe St.

Other community sessions are also scheduled for Tuesday, April 1 at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School (19535 E. 46th Ave.); Tuesday, April 15 at Bruce Randolph Middle School (3955 Steele St.); and Tuesday, April 29 at Kunsmiller Middle School (2250 S. Quitman Way). All community sessions will run from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

The Web site includes a powerful search function that uses an individual home address to begin looking for schools that may be of interest and meet specific needs.

The new Web site can be found by clicking on “Schools” from the district’s main site. A companion site in Spanish is available by clicking on “Escuelas.”

The Web site allows parents to choose a grade level (elementary, middle or high), enter their home address, and begin searching the entire database of schools for the most suitable match.

Once a possible school has been identified, the new on-line school reports provide a host of data and information about each school, including a unique narrative describing the school. The data are displayed with colorful bar charts and pie charts.

The Web site was engineered by the non-profit GreatSchools, a San Francisco-based firm that seeks to provide parents with information to make informed decisions when it comes to supporting their children’s education.
