Update On 2003 Summer School Program Offerings

The district’s Office of Extended Learning is providing updated information about the plans for the 2003 Summer School program. This update also clarifies information published in the March 7 edition of Board News.

According to the Office of Extended Learning:

  • A high school program will be offered for current tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade students who have failed a required class for graduation. The cost per class will be $30.00. Students who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch will be eligible for a scholarship.
  • On line classes (built around access to the Web) will be offered in American History, Geography, Government, Algebra 1, 2, Geometry 1, 2, and Introduction to Literature 1 and 2. Sites for this program are to be determined.
  • Traditional courses of Algebra 1, 2, Geometry 1, 2, and Introduction to Literature 1 and 2 (Studio Course) will be offered at Abraham Lincoln High School (2285 S. Federal Blvd.).
  • Classes will also be offered through the Community College of Denver (CCD).

Incoming tenth graders will be allowed to register for DPS-run courses only for a fee on a space available basis after a set deadline.

There will be no mandatory or English Language Learners program for elementary and middle school students during the summer of 2003.

Information will be sent to all schools soon. The Denver Public Schools portion of the program will run from June 9 through July 3.

Students who wish to attend the Community College of Denver program will need to make arrangements to take their spring exams early; the CCD classes begin May 27 (before the regular year calendar for DPS ends).

The registration deadline is May 15 but applications will be considered after that date on a space-available basis.

The reductions in Summer School program offerings were among the changes approved by the Board of Education March 6 as part of a $11.7 million reduction in the current school year budget.
