DPS Students Fare Well At State Mathcounts Competition

Denver Public Schools sent 172 participants to the Colorado Mathcounts competition Saturday (March 8) and four finished in the top 10 percent.

Hamilton Middle School’s Kevin Black finished 44th, Henry Middle School’s Jason Chiu finished 59th, and Morey Middle School’s team included Mike Nill (55th) and Ned Mills (86th). About 1,000 students in all from around the state participated in the event at the University of Denver.

Mathcounts is the only nationwide coaching and competition mathematics program designed to improve math skills among sixth, seventh and eighth grade students who are at a crucial stage in developing and sustaining math interest and ability. In Colorado, the program is made possible by the Professional Engineers of Colorado. The competition topics include algebra, probability, approximation, geometry and statistics.
