Castro Elementary School Celebrates Brotherhood

Castro Elementary School will host two assemblies on Friday, Feb. 14 to celebrate Native American and Chinese culture. The assemblies will highlight the diversity of each culture.

Wilma Thin Elk will moderate the Native American assembly, which will begin at 9:30 a.m. Mrs. Wilma Thin Elk is a member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe and has three great grandchildren and one grandchild attending Castro.

The performers at the Native American assembly include Delores Pacheco, Miguel Guarado and Ezequille Guarado. They will perform dances such as the Jingle Dress Song and Round Dance. The drummers for the performance will be Doug Foote of Standing Rock Sioux, and Lee Planty Wolf of Pine Ridge Dakota.

Following the Native American assembly Christina Yeh will direct an assembly, beginning at 10:30 a.m., which will celebrate the Chinese culture.

Yeh graduated from Chinese University in Taipei, Taiwan. She is currently the choreographer at Christina Yeh Dance Studio, where she teaches Chinese dances to children and adults.

The Chinese assembly will include a group of Chinese students performing dances such as the Silver Plate Dance, Taiwan Aboriginal Festival Dance, Chinese Yo-Yo and Flower Drum Dance. Yeh will also provide historical importance and background for each dance.
