New York Vocal Sensation to Perform on Valentine’s Day to Benefit Denver School of the Arts

On Valentine’s Day, the Denver School of the Arts will showcase two of its talented faculty members during “An Evening of Songs About Love.” The elegant Schomp Mansion will serve as the backdrop for the romantic evening.

Performing will be New York vocal sensation Traci Kern, who is associate director of the Vocal Music Department at Denver School of the Arts. Accompanying her will be acclaimed pianist Scott Shively, director of the department.

There are two benefit performances scheduled - one at 7:00 p.m., one at 10:00 p.m. The Schomp Mansion is located at 680 Clarkson St. Champagne and dessert will be served following each performance.

Donations are $50 per couple or $25 for “single hearts.” Proceeds will support the Vocal Music Department at DSA. Reservations can be made by calling (303) 922-2077.

Among the songs to be performed: “I Got Rhythm” (George and Ira Gershwin), “Easy To Love” (Cole Porter), “I Got It Bad” (Duke Ellington and Paul Francis Webster), and “Ain’t Misbehavin” (Fats Waller, Andy Razaf and Harry Brooks).

Traci Kern joined the Vocal Music Department after recently returning from New York City. It was while in New York that Kern appeared as a guest soloist at the Special Olympics New York Metro Tournament.

Kern has proven herself as a multifaceted artist by performing a wide variety of genres including, classical, jazz, pop musical performances, and musical theater.

Kern has sung such varied characters as Diva/Mother in “Starmites,” Crystal in “Little Shop of Horrors,” Sarah Brown in “Guys and Dolls,” and Tzeitel in “Fiddler on the Roof.”

Additionally, Kern has been a soloist with various jazz ensembles around the Midwest, and currently has a solo album out, “Taking Some Time.” That recording features original songs written for her by contemporary songwriters.

Scott Shively is entering his fifth year as Director of Vocal Music at DSA. He has been teaching for a total of 16 years at the middle school, high school, and university level.

Shively sang with the Canto Spiritus, a local chamber choir in Denver, for three seasons. He made his Lincoln Center debut in New York in March of 1999. Shively also sang with the nationally renowned Phoenix Bach Choir for two years.

Shively is currently a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing, American Choral Directors Association, Music Educations National Conference, and the International Association of Jazz Educators.
