“Me And The Dream” Celebration Wednesday, January 15 Includes Students From Five Denver Middle Schools

On Wednesday, Jan. 15, “Me And The Dream” will bring 320 eighth-grade students together for a day of education and discussion about civil rights and race relations in the United States.

The students will be treated to a private screening of the film “Remember The Titans” at the Cherry Creek Shopping Center's Colorado Cinemas theaters. The screening will be followed by small group discussions about the film's theme and the relevance it has today. During the discussions, the students will be surprised by a personal visit from four of the actors in the film. The program concludes with a luncheon featuring Denver's First Lady Wilma Webb, and student-athlete Marcus Houston.

Students from Dora Moore K-8 School, and Cole, Hill, Smiley, and Morey middle schools will attend the event.

The event is a joint effort of the Cherry Creek Shopping Center in partnership with First Data Corp., Western Union, Dora Moore K-8 School, News 4, In The Black magazine, Colorado Cinema, and Qwest. The event is designed to be an important celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and black history month.

A student essay contest is included in the program. Students will address the topic: “How do I live my life, day by day, in a manner that best exemplifies the dreams of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.?” Prizes will be awarded.

The screening will begin at 9:00 a.m., the group discussions from 11:10 a.m. to noon; and the luncheon from noon to 1:30 p.m.

Dora Moore K-8 School’s eighth grade students were invited in October to help plan the event. The Dora Moore students were charged with selecting the text to be used as a resource for the essay contest and for designing the awards to be given to the winning essays.
