“The Vocal Chords” from Crofton Elementary Chosen to Perform at Colorado Music Educators Association Clinic/Conference

“The Vocal Chords,” a 20-member choir from Crofton Elementary School, has been invited to perform at the Colorado Music Educators Association’s annual state convention this year. This choir was one of four elementary school choirs in the state of Colorado to receive this honor.

This is the first year that members of “The Vocal Chords” have sung together. The choir consists of students from 1st through 5th grades chosen by audition. The group rehearses twice a week during the school day. In addition to performing in Colorado Springs, “The Vocal Chords” sang at the National Association for the Gifted Conference at the Adams Mark Hotel on Nov. 1. They will be performing a concert at Crofton on Tuesday, Dec. 17 at 7:00 p.m.

The choir seeks to unite children with a love of singing. The students learn music from many styles, time periods and cultures, focusing on teamwork and cooperation while studying 2-part music. “The Vocal Chords” extends the mission of Crofton Elementary, which is to broaden the depth and content of learning by accentuating strengths of each student through arts infusion in all subject areas.

The director of “The Vocal Chords” is Ruth Balza. The accompanist is David Brussel. Ms. Balza holds degrees in music performance and music education as well as a Master of Arts degree in Curriculum and Instruction. This is her 6th year teaching children’s choirs and instrumental music. At Crofton, Ms. Balza also teaches literacy and history to 4th grade students.
