“I want to read, I want to read, I want to read a million words.” These lyrics are just a sample of a skit at Force Elementary School (1550 S. Wolff St.) that will celebrate Denver Public Schools “Million Words Campaign.” As part of the district’s Elementary Literacy Program, this campaign was established to encourage every child to read one million words every year.
The celebratory event takes place at Force Elementary on Thursday, Nov. 7 beginning with the first performance at 9:15 a.m. Literacy coaches Gilberto Marin and Gail Newhall will put on their musical hats and act out “A Million Words.” Students will debut their acting and singing talents throughout the morning assemblies.
Later assemblies will be held at 10:00 a.m., 10:45 a.m., and 11:30 a.m. Country Buffet will be sponsoring the Eager Reader Award with a complimentary meal coupon from the Country Buffet “Bee.” Force invites parents and the community to come and celebrate their eager readers and enjoy the fun activities in kicking off the “Million Word Campaign.”
After Thursday’s celebratory event, Force Elementary students will begin selling “Million Word Campaign” T-shirts for $8.00. The T-shirt reads: “Future millionaire – I am on my way to reading a million words at Force Elementary.” The T-shirt fundraiser will support student literacy achievement incentives. For information on purchasing one of these fashionable Force T-shirts, please call Sandra Mendez at 303-935-3595.
