Kids Voting Denver – Election Results

Students across Denver Public Schools cast 4,910 ballots yesterday to cap their study of the electoral process through Kids Voting Denver.

The results, tabulated last night by the DPS Office of Assessment and Testing, are in:

  • Republican incumbent Gov. Bill Owens topped Democratic challenger Rollie Heath, 2,725 – 1,136 in the campaign for Colorado governor.
  • Democratic incumbent Diana DeGette drew 2,244 over her principal rival, Republican Ken Chlouber, who received 988 votes, for a two-year term in the United States Congress.
  • Democratic challenger Tom Strickland drew 1,778 votes over Republican incumbent Wayne Allard’s 1,047 votes for a six-year term in the United States Senate.
  • Democratic challenger Anthony Martinez drew 975 votes over Republican incumbent Mike Coffman’s 526 votes in the race for State Treasurer.
  • Incumbent Democratic State Attorney Ken Salazar topped Republican challenger Marti Allbright, 1,181 – 571.
  • Amendment 27 (Campaign Finance) lost in a squeaker, 1,041 – 1,107.
  • Amendment 28 (Mail Ballot Elections) won in another extremely tight vote, 1,089 – 1,059.
  • Amendment 29 (Selecting Candidates for Primary Elections) lost in a tight race, 964 – 1,140.
  • Amendment 30 (Election Day Voter Registration) won 3,191 – 1,451.
  • Amendment 31 (English language education) lost 1,189 – 2,527.
  • Referendum E (Cesar Chavez Holiday) earned strong support, 3,111 – 1,471.

Votes for independent and third-party candidates made up the difference between the total number of votes cast and the total votes cast for each of the major party candidates.

Schools participating included North, West, Kennedy and Manual – Leadership high schools; Cole, Martin Luther King Jr., Smiley and Lake middle schools; and Wyman, Castro, Palmer, Centennial, Swansea, Crofton, Amesse, Montclair, Ford, and Brown elementary schools.

Kids Voting Denver is part of a non-partisan national program Kids Voting USA. In Denver, the effort was supported by the Mayor’s Office, The Denver Election Commission, the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce, the League of Women Voters, and The University Club.
