George Washington High School Senior Published in Concord Review

George Washington High School Senior Adam Crager was recently published in the Summer 2002 edition of the prestigious Concord Review.

The Concord Review is the only quarterly journal in the world that publishes the academic work of secondary students. The journal publishes “exemplary history essays by high school students” for subscribers in 42 states and 31 countries, according to the Concord Review. Crager’s paper, “Marxism vs. Anarchism: The Historical Ramifications of a Philosophical Schism,” is about “the philosophical origin and the historical consequences of the conflict between Marxism and anarchism,” he said. “It focuses on how this conflict came to a boiling point in the feud between Karl Marx and the Russian anarchist thinker Michael Bakunin in the First International, resulting in Bakunin’s eventual expulsion from the organization and the fateful split of the formerly unified radical left into the disparate Marxist and anarchist factions.”

Crager originally wrote his paper to submit for National History Day (NHD) while he was in teacher Bonnie Guggenheim’s International Baccalaureate (IB) history class his sophomore year. Guggenheim encouraged him to submit it to the Concord Review, he said. Crager’s family, friends, and the faculty at George Washington High School were excited when they found out that his paper was published.

Students congratulated him “after Mrs. Guggenheim apparently told all her history classes,” he said. Currently Crager is enrolled in three Advanced Placement Courses, and two Post-Secondary Classes at the University of Colorado-Denver.

In addition to school, he plays bassoon in the Denver Young Artists Orchestra, plays the saxophone in the Colorado Honor Band Jazz Band, has fenced twice in the Junior Olympics, and works part-time for a catering company. After graduating Crager plans to pursue a Ph.D. in philosophy. George Washington High School is located at 655 S. Monaco St., 303-394-8600.
